WHY GOLDEN DOODLES?

The Golden doodle is rapidly gaining popularity here in the United States.  With our environment being what it is today, many children are born with allergies!  Many people also love the temperament of the Golden Retriever, but don't want all that shedding hair!  This combination is also quite impressive looking, so don't be surprised if   others fall in love with your golden doodle!  Many people have never seen one and have NO CLUE what a Golden doodle is or looks like; Once they see one....it's instant LOVE!

Soft curl, medium curls, or the wavy/shaggy look!

The Golden doodle gets its name from it's mixed heritage - golden retriever and poodle.  My  Golden doodles are a  first generation cross. the first cross between two unrelated purebred lines is healthier and grows better than either parent line.  The puppies take on the best traits of both breeds.

The AKC has ranked dogs according to popularity in North America.  The Golden Retriever ranked 4th and the Poodle ranked 5th, out of 148 breeds.  In his book "The Intelligence of Dogs" Stanley Coren ranks 79 dog breeds in order of intelligence.  Poodles scored 2nd and Golden Retrievers were 4th.

The hybrid cross between these two parent breeds are terrific family dogs, friendly, intelligent, affectionate and easy to train. Awesome for Therapy Dogs.

Many poodle crosses inherit the fur qualities of the poodle, but not the texture.  This means that most don't shed, or shed lightly, and may not produce an allergic reaction.

The Golden Doodles Coat
By age 4 weeks, their face begins to get crinkles between their forehead and their nose.  Little ringlets appear around the ears and legs.  Our pups come in apricot, cream. .
Goldendoodles will usually lighten in color as they age.    As the Golden doodle puppies get closer to their 7th week of life,  their coat begins to have a "two-toned" effect in the coloring....meaning that those who are red or apricot will have lighter shades of cream about the eyes, under-belly and about the legs and chest.    By age 7.5 weeks of age, their coat is much thicker and little waves begin to appear.   The doodles' coat will go through "phases".   Many people are confused (when they purchase their doodle from a breeder who claims their dogs will not shed) when they see their doodle "blowing their coat".  This is just a phase the doodle goes through.  They are losing their baby coat to allow the adult coat to come in.  We see this phase begin to take affect starting at the age of 9-10 weeks of age.  This phase will continue up until the puppy is 16 weeks of age.
From 16 weeks of age,  their coat will be a bit shorter and wavier,  but as your doodle continues to age,  the coat will continue to lengthen.  The coat will take a full 2 years to mature and grow.

Golden Retrievers as well as standard poodles are basic field dogs.  They have active minds and active bodies.  They are at their best when allowed room to run & play.  Our dogs simply love the water! It's never a surprise to see this trait come out in our golden doodles!  Playful, robust and always looking for new things to do would describe our  doodles!  They are real attention getters, that's for sure.
